Summer Camps
"A Living Village" was the theme of for 2008, "Tiempo de Crecer" was for 2007.
The event is the only one of its kind in Las Terrenas and it started in 2006. A
pictorial report for 2009 appears here. During four weeks children and youth 6-18
participated in activities that included primarily arts and crafts, but also sports as
well as social, cultural and educational events, mostly in small groups.
In general, camps start with general sessions on the general theme, then attendees
(approximately 100-150 each day for 3 hrs.) break out into smaller groups led by
volunteers to do projects and activities. Volunteers work in pairs, help with group
processes and help nurture individual and groups based on camps' objectives.
For 2008 camps ran from July 7-August 1, and volunteer training took place July
1-4, ending with a big party on the 4th. A report of the 2007 edition of these
camps. including photos, can be seen here.
Volunteers are expected to work at least 20 hrs a week and those who dedicate
more time can run individual projects with children, youth and/or the community
during the week.
Spanish language ability is a plus but we try to pair up non-Spanish speakers with
local bilingual individuals. A positive, culturally-respectful attitude and good energy
are essential. People who play musical instruments, have ESL experience, like to
do crafts or teach a sport (volleyball, soccer, swimming) can use their talents as
well. In addition, people who can teach computer navigation, literacy and have
experience with building self-esteem and small group activities are greatly
appreciated.
