Micro-credits

The results of the community diagnostics
revealed that a key factor affecting the
quality of life of women is their ability to
have economic independence.  One sure
way to elevate self-esteem, self-reliance
and to avoid oppressive and abusive
conditions is for women to have greater
economic conditions.
Upon conclusion of the community
research project it became obvious that we
needed to give greater attention to the
issue of micro-credits or economic
development.  To that end we explored a
number of possibilities since Fundación
Mahatma Gandhi does not have the
experience or necessary resources to
manage an economic development
program or a micro-credit project.
One of the organizations contacted was
Esperanza Internacional.  We met with
them and agreed to a work plan, meeting
several times over a couple of months
including site visits.  The end result was a
capacity-building program that provided
economic, business and spiritual training
based on Esperanza's project design and
goals.
First Micro-Credit Project

Fifteen women received small grants
ranging from $5,000-10,000 pesos
(US$150-300).  The beneficiaries were
organized into three groups of five people
each.  Disbursement occurred at the end of
March and the loans repayment plan is for
six months.
Esperanza Internacional has benefited over
80,000 people, having disbursed about
500 million pesos in loans averaging 6,000
pesos each and a repayment performance
of 98%.  It's a solid and experienced
method and their office in Samaná City
manages the program in Las Terrenas
(
more).
Funds for this first project were donated by
Anjana Puri and the future development of
the project will depend on future donations
and Esperanza's ongoing support.
Some of the beneficiaries have started
small stores, are preparing food to sell, are
buying and selling clothing and other small
projects.
We appreciate Esperanza International's
strategic support to these efforts in our
pursuit of bettering the quality of life of
these women.  A video about  Esperanza
Internacional can be seen in

English).
