Disaster Prevention and
Mitigation Project
Las Terrenas, Samaná Province,
Dominican Republic
The recent events in Haiti are a mirror for our reality in Las Terrenas.
Earthquakes may strike at any moment and since they are unpredictable
our community needs a mitigation plan that could incluye preventive and
educational components.

At the present time the City of Las Terrenas lacks any type of disaster
prevention and mitigation plans, not even a fire truck!  The present
situation needs to change and, toward that end, we are calling all people
and organizations interested in changing the present state of affairs to
participate in any or all of three events related to the creation of a
Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Plan for the City of Las Terrenas.

The meetings will be:
1.        An orientation and information meeting about what might be
posible and potentially necessary.  90 minutes, on Wednesday, January
27th, 7-8:30 pm (location to be announced).  Objectives:  a) provide
general orientation to participant about what constitutes a potential plan;
b) collect observations, conditions and urgent needs among
participants; and, c) to form a steering committee that would lead in the
implementation of the next two steps.  NOTE:  the meeting will start and
end on time.  Details here.

2.        A consultation with the internacional coordinator of the Program for
Disaster Prevention and Mitigation of the United Nations Development
Programme (PNUD).  Objectives:  a)  to establish the parameters
needed for the PNUD’s assistance; b) inventorize existing resources in
the community within the framework of the project; and, c) establish the
critical path and the available and/or needed resources for a successful
completion.  Logistics will be determined down the road.

3.        Carry out the Project.  Those who want more details are welcome
