Special Volunteer Opportunity
Teacher Volunteer/Intern

For other volunteer opportunities go here.

Overview
We are seeking an ideal candidate to start a new
PreK/K/Pre Primary bilingual program (English
and Spanish) for children 4-6.  We seek someone
who is creative, a self-starter, experienced, willing
to teach and to learn with us as we try something
new and exciting. Formal training or experience in
teaching that age group is very important and
training and expertise in either Montessori or
Waldorf is highly desirable. The ideal person
should be committed to stay for at least a year.
We welcome all peoples regardless of nationality, skin color, ethnicity, age, sex,
sexual orientation, language, professional or socio-economic status, physical
appearance, disability, religious or political orientation, or educational level.

About Las Terrenas
Las Terrenas is also a beautiful place with 10 miles of wonderful beaches, lush
hills and mountains, great restaurants (French, Italian, Spanish, German,
Dominican and many others), natural wonders like waterfalls, springs, caves,
trails, humpback whales, national parks and many opportunities to help the
community to be even better. A former fishing village it has now become a hectic
metropoli with lots of tourist development going on, including many new
buildings and shopping plazas. It's being called the "Montecarlo of the
Caribbean."

The need comes from expats as well as Dominicans who are seeking for an
enriching, diverse and culturally respectful educational program. Our Foundation
is exploring the possibility of starting an unofficial educational program with a
group of 4-6 years old using Montessori, Waldorf or other equally program with a
group of 4-6 year olds.  The idea is to use arts, music, reading-'riting-rithmetic
and the environment as content areas.

The Work
At the present time this is a volunteer position (we don't have the funds to offer a
salary) and the volunteer him/herself would play a major role in its development

The position is open to anyone, from any country, resident or not in Las
Terrenas who shares in the ideals and values of our Foundation as found
here.
Ideally we would like to start in fall 2007.  We realize that for someone to come
under the conditions described below he/she may be starting a career or ending
one, but who knows!

The volunteer/intern would work with local parents and other volunteers, would
help build/create resources as well as help determine program scope, content
and practices. The idea is to start small, with 3-6 kids and with families who are
already familiar with some of the philosophies or have a good sense of
outcomes desired, so that they are in a better position to support this startup
project.

This opportunity would place the ideal candidate in the midst of a multicultural
community with about 3000 foreigners that include citizens from France, Italy,
Germany, Spain and from other 25+ nationalities in addition to hundreds of
Dominican families. If you are socially-concerned there are opportunities to get
involved in literacy, environmental, health and educational projects as well. The
Foundation operates a library and we have the ambition of transforming it into a
truly media and educational center for a variety of practices that include arts,
music and the environment. The candidate would help make it a reality.

Costs and/or Benefits
There are no charges associated with this volunteer/intern service opportunity.
The Foundation charges no fees but the volunteer/intern is responsible for
personal expenses such as health, food and transportation.

No salary is paid.  A stipend would be offered similar to a local teacher's salary
but no more than $300-400 a month, depending on contributing families.  A
local teacher makes approximately $250-300 a month for full-time employment.
A free room would be provided in the Foundation's volunteer house (shared
bath) with access to a fully equipped kitchen.  The volunteer may live with
spouse/partner in same room at no additional expense.

Summary
What you would do:  teach, create, organize, support, plan, get the program
started and be responsible for your transport, health and local expenses.
What we would do:  stipend of $300-500/mo, free room (value of $500/mo), help
you come to a wonderful place that is beautiful, challenged by the tensions
created by wealth and poverty.

Las Terrenas is a community of great potential and one in great need of people
committed to peace and justice through social change.  We prefer to work with
someone committed to service with integrity and honesty, who is willing to get
his/her hands dirty if need be and who is willing to help the organization and its
programs expand.  We feel it couldn't be done without a growing and respectful
appreciation of the people and their cultures.
